Delete your data

This page is about Ping, the personal daily companion app for Singapore published by Benjamin Lien. It covers two separate things: deleting some of your data while keeping your account, and deleting your account entirely.

Delete some of your data, and keep your account

You do not have to delete your account to remove your data. In the app, anything you saved can be deleted individually at any time:

1. Open Ping.
2. Go to the item you want gone — a place, a saved bus route, a friend, or a visit.
3. Delete it there.

What that removes: the item, and anything attached to it — deleting a place also deletes the visits recorded against it. If you are signed in, it is removed from your account and from your other devices too, and it does not come back.

If you would rather ask us to do it, email benliente@gmail.com from the address you signed in with, saying what you would like deleted. We will do it and tell you when it is done.

What is kept when you delete data this way: your account itself, and your name and email address from signing in. Nothing else — if you delete every place, route and visit, nothing of yours remains beyond the account. Deleted items leave a marker for 180 days so a device that was switched off cannot restore them; the marker records only that something was deleted and when.

Delete your account entirely

In the app: Settings → Account → Delete account.

By email, if you no longer have the app

If you have changed phone or already uninstalled Ping, email benliente@gmail.com from the address you signed in with, and the account will be deleted for you.

Writing from the signed-in address is what lets us tell it is really you asking. If you cannot, say so and we will find another way to check rather than simply refusing.

What is deleted

• Your account and your sign-in details.
• Everything stored in your account in the cloud — your saved places, saved bus routes and visit history, including your own notes and ratings.
• If you signed in with Apple, the permission you granted is withdrawn with Apple as well, so it disappears from your Apple ID settings instead of sitting there looking active.

What is kept

The places on your phone stay on your phone. They were yours before you had an account, and deleting the account does not take them away. If you want those gone too, delete them in the app or uninstall it — uninstalling removes everything stored on the device.

Deleted items leave a marker for 180 days, so that a device which was switched off for a while cannot restore something you removed. The marker records only that something was deleted and when. After 180 days it goes too.

If something goes wrong

If any part of the deletion cannot be completed, nothing is deleted and the app tells you so. You are never left half-removed, believing you are gone when you are not.

Things worth knowing

• Your friends were never uploaded in the first place. Names, phone numbers and your notes about people stay on the device always, so there is nothing about them to delete from anywhere else.
• You do not need an account to use Ping. After deleting it, the app keeps working exactly as it did — the map, your places, bus arrivals and everything you saved.
